Wilmington

The port city of Wilmington, North Carolina is situated between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. It is the county seat of New Hanover County and is the eighth largest city in North Carolina. Wilmington was originally settled along the river by Europeans in the 1720's and later became incorporated as a city in 1739. Named in honor of Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, the second Prime Minister of Britain, Wilmington's rich history can still be witnessed today in its historic district and downtown area.

Wilmington offers a wide array of activities, so there is something for everyone. History lovers will enjoy a stroll along the Riverwalk in the downtown area or maybe a visit to USS North Carolina memorial and museum. For those who prefer the sun and sand, the city offers three beautiful local beaches — Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach. Whether you want to get out of the water on a jet ski or just a leisurely day of sunbathing, these beaches are the perfect spot. There is also a robust calendar of events and festivals throughout the year including the Azalea Festival and Wilmington Riverfest.

Wilmington also has a thriving local economy, making it a great place to relocate. The city made Forbes Magazine's "Best Places for Business and Careers" list in 2010. The strongest contributors to the economic base are medical, education, electronic and telecommunication equipment, and pharmaceuticals. The film industry also contributes, as Wilmington has been nicknamed "East Hollywood". Home to the EUE/Screen Gems Studios, over 350 films, television shows, and commercials have been filmed in the studio. Tourism also plays a role in maintaining the economy as the city draws visitors from all over the country with its Southern charm and hospitality.
