Topsail Island

Topsail Island is comprised of the communities of North Topsail Beach, Surf City and Topsail Beach. The 26-mile barrier island is located just south of Camp Lejeune. There is some debate amongst the locals regarding the origin of the island's name; however, the most popular tale involves looting pirates. It is said that pirates would hide in the channel between the shore and the island waiting for merchant ships to pass. They would board the ships and steal the goods from the unsuspecting merchants. The merchants became privy to their hiding spot and started looking for the top of the sail of the pirate ship, as it was the only portion of the ship that could be seen from afar. Whether this is truly the origin of the name or not, Topsail Island definitely has a rich history and is a beautiful maritime destination.

Lovers of sea turtles will enjoy the island, as it is a common nesting ground for four species in particular — loggerhead, green, leatherback and Ridleys Sea Turtle. Due to declining populations, efforts have been set forth to protect the turtles, particularly the loggerhead species. The Topsail Turtle Project and the subsequent Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center spearhead these efforts. Residents and tourists can visit the center to witness the great work that the facility does to ensure these creatures remain local residents for years to come.

Located at the topmost end of the island, North Topsail Beach is connected to Jacksonville on the shoreline. Surf City is the largest of the three communities and is situated in the center of the island, divided between Pender and Onslow counties. Topsail Beach is located at the south end of the island. All three communities strive to provide a family-oriented lifestyle with a traditional beach-living feel. As a matter of fact, high-rise buildings aren't even allowed on the island. Each is making its own individual effort protect and further beautify the community parks and beaches for the enjoyment of both residents and tourists.
