Jacksonville, North Carolina, the county seat of Onslow County is home to both United States Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River. Jacksonville has relied on military presence since its founding in 1757, originally for production for naval stores. It grew into an increasingly more important part of the city's economy in 1941 with the establishment of Camp Lejeune. Jacksonville has also been designated as a North Carolina Fit Community because of its dedication to the healthy and outdoor focused lifestyle of its residents.
